Coffee Talk [May 2017]
Have you ever worked so hard on something, or gone through a period where you were so busy, that one day you look up & realize you checked out for a minute? That’s been me for the last few weeks. Whoops! I thought a Coffee Talk would be the perfect thing to catch up with you guys & let you know what’s going on. In case you missed any past Coffee Talk posts, you can check them out here and here!
Here’s a little peak into what’s going on in my world lately…
1 // Mini-Getaway
So I’ve hinted at it a few times… I’m working on building/launching my 2nd business (creatively titled, Sam Vander Wielen LLC) like a madwoman. SVW is my new business that offers coaches, creatives, and entrepreneurs DIY legal resources (like contracts, website policies, etc.) and business mentorship to launch or grow their own business the right way.
I wanted to create a space to help people who can’t or don’t want to hire a lawyer quite yet, but they still need to know how to start a business. Or, if they’ve already started one, I wanted to help them protect what they’ve worked so hard to build. The site is 94% done and it looks beautiful so far. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
Don’t worry, Hygge Wellness isn’t going anywhere. It’s my baby! And I love my clients, working together with them through my 3-month health coaching program, and chatting with all of you. I’m just also really, really passionate about helping other women start or grow their own business. As you guys know, I was NOT happy practicing as an attorney… but I was a corporate attorney & I have a lot of useful info to share with women who are carving their own path.
That said….I crawled in a cave for the last few months to build SVW from the ground up. Starting a business is the most exciting & exhausting process. I kind of love it, to be honest. But it is SO much work! It’s actually a great experience to start yet another business so I can help my (future) SVW business mentor clients even more! But I reached a point last week where I needed a break.
I was burnt to a crisp. I actually hadn’t felt that way since I took the Bar exam. You know… that feeling of walking around like a zombie where you can’t even get your words out straight? That was me.
So Ryan & I were in real need of a little getaway. We spent 5 days or so down the shore (that’s what us Jersey girls call it!) just relaxing, walking, having a lot of coffee, and reading on the beach. It was GLORIOUS.
My favorite coffee shop down the shore…. No. 7311
Lots & lots of walks on the boardwalk. The weather was absolutely stunning.
I felt like a whole new woman…. exactly what I needed!
2 // Enjoying Petite Treats
When I went to Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, etc. last year, I was struck by how each coffee was served with a tiny treat. I know it’s so simple, but I fell in love with the concept of having a little sweet treat with coffee from time to time.
It feels so special. Maybe because I don’t eat too many sweets? Either way, I tend to enjoy these a little more. Maybe because they’re so small & I savor each mind. Mindful (sugar) eating at its finest…
This homemade fig newton from No. 7311 in Ventnor…
How good does that look?! Thanks No. 7311 for being consistently awesome.
3 // Eating More Plants
I don’t follow or subscribe to any ‘diet’ or one way of eating. I do love plants, though. And I’ve thought a lot lately about the fact that “plant-based” can mean more than being vegan. I’m a big proponent of trying to get as many people as possible to eat more whole foods. Although veganism is wonderful (more power to those of you who can stop eating cheese!!!), it’s not for everyone. And I would rather see people ADD more plants to their diet than not because they feel like it’s vegan or bust.
Plant-based should mean just that — the BASIS of your meal is PLANTS. It doesn’t mean that you need to eat lettuce for every meal. It means that, more often than not, the basis of your meal could be plant-derived.
We’re eating more plant-based meals at home these days. We eat animal protein if & when we want it when we go out. Here are a few meals I’ve had lately that are plant-based AND delicious…
Falafel bowl (vegan) from Naf Naf grill…
Homemade (by me!) Lentil Tacos w/ guac…
Chickpea, kale, broccolini, red onion + sweet potato Buddha Bowls w/ tahini (from Minimalist Baker)…
OMG this is making me hungry. Let me know if you experiment with adding any more plants to your diet! If so, pay attention to how you feel. I know I feel full, satisfied, and full of energy.
4 // Natural Sunscreen
It’s super hard to find a sunscreen that works, doesn’t make you look like the Michelin man, and that’s not-so-harmful for you (aka filled with chemicals). This Alba Botanica sunscreen spray isn’t PERFECT, but it works. Thought I’d share it in case anyone is looking for a natural sunscreen option!
So! That’s a little look into what’s going on in my life. What about you? Any fun finds lately? Good recipes you’ve tried? I’d love to hear from you! Drop a comment below or email me : )
